Biography

Martin Shafer is a Senior Scientist with the University of Wisconsin-Madison State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) where he serves as research lead of the Environmental Health Division of the WSLH. He is an environmental biogeochemist conducting research in the cycling of metals, pathogens and emerging contaminants in aquatic, biologic, and atmospheric systems, with a focus on the interface of environmental chemistry and human health. He coordinates laboratory initiatives for the Wisconsin Wastewater Surveillance Program and the WSLH PFAS Research program, as well as oversees Quality Assurance for the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP). Dr. Shafer has authored and co-authored more than 207 peer-reviewed manuscripts.
